I fly home on my nephew's 12th birthday, and am curious what books you recommend giving to an athletic, introverted, incredibly smart young man. I want to get him the "Percy Jackson" trilogy- I have loved these books as much, if not better than the "Harry Potter's" (gasp! I know, its almost blasphemous to even write that...), but I don't know if he is too old, too cool for that? He is currently reading the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and is halfway through the "Potter's." He and I were both bored during the "Chronicles of Narnia..." See my dilema!!!
Any suggestions?

Maybe the Philip Pullman Dark Materials trilogy or the Children of the Lamp series by P. B. Kerr. Might consider some of the Athurian series...I loved the series by Mary Stewart--was easy to read and gave me a good background for exploring other Authurian authors...he might enjoy the Kevin Crossley-Holland trilogy.
ooooh, thanks- I'll look into these. Was also thinking maybe since he has been in the productions of Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland, it might be fun to read the original stories since he's only read the children's theatre scripts and seen the animated films...
Pullman is an excellent choice. You should read the trilogy yourself. Very engrossing and sort of a "God" theme like narnia, although you don't realize until the 3rd book.
Do they have to be fantasy? If he likes sports you might try some of Chris Crutcher's stories. I discovered him in one of my classes and enjoyed his books more than I thought I might. Do a little researching tho before you just all out buy them, b/c some of his are more high-school appropriate rather than junior high. He can be found at http://www.chriscrutcher.com
Crutcher is a good suggestion...so is Matt Christopher for sports.
Do you need anymore ideas or does that give you a starting place?
That's good-- I'm going to do a little shopping next week. I appreciate all the suggestions- think I'll look into going the sports route; hadn't even thought of that! Then again, you know me, start shopping and end up with something completly off the wall.
